Spring show marks the end of the dance season, which means tryouts are just around the corner. Medallions, Knightlites and students interested in the program start the tryout process.
“The first two days of tryouts, we learned the choreography and then on the third day we had the mock tryout, where the seniors gave us critiques and things they liked,” Amaya Pratt, a junior on varsity, said.
The tryout routine has two sections. The first half is the JV portion where the dancer demonstrates basic skills such as a pirouette, a leap and simple pom moves. The varsity portion has more advanced skills like kickline, a calypso and a double pirouette instead of a single.
During the normal tryouts, Medallions have a separate tryout the same day, which is officer tryouts. They have to choreograph their own dance, make a slideshow answering questions and give ideas for the upcoming season. Then they perform their dance in front of the judges and get interviewed after.
